Writing from the Inside Out: Coaching for Young Writers

As a published author, editor, and writing coach, I help students write from the inside out.

For many students, writing is a challenge. There are good reasons why this is so. To write authentically, we need to tap into our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs–to express who we are inside.  I help my young clients focus on bringing what they want to say on the inside comfortably outside, onto paper.

Who benefits?

Coaching is beneficial to students who lack confidence as writers and/or who want to explore their gift with words.

How does coaching work?

First, I focus on creating a safe, positive space for self-expression, by helping the student engage in a writing exercise that sparks the imagination and provides ideas and topics to build on. Next, we discuss what form that the writing will take, whether a short story, poem, essay, chapter book, script, etc. I model strategies to help the student get started, and the writing begins! From rough draft to revisions and finished piece, I help break the steps down into manageable chunks so that the student has a sense of accomplishment along the way.

What are the results?

With my inside-out approach, the student learns to relax into writing, gaining increased confidence and self-esteem. He or she feels an expanded sense of his or her capabilities in communicating more effectively, and completing projects once begun. The result is an increased sense of competency and comfort with writing.
